KOTA KINABALU: The Sarawak Premier and Sabah Chief Minister officially launch the Sarawak-Sabah Power Grid Interconnection, linking the two state grids on Saturday (Jan 24).

“By linking our two grids, we are creating a stronger energy network.

“This interconnection, which began operations on Dec 13 last year, can deliver practical benefits for Borneo,” said Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the opening ceremony.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sabah-Sarawak Interconnection Power Grid project will strengthen Sabah’s electricity supply.

“Sabah appreciates Sarawak’s willingness to be a strategic energy partner,” said Hajiji.

Also present were Asean Centre for Energy (ACE) chief executive officer, Datuk Razib Dawood, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar and Sarawak Energy group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

The Sarawak–Sabah interconnection, which features the 275kV Lawas-Mengalong transmission line, forms part of a 326km grid expansion that includes 881 transmission towers and related infrastructure. The interconnection now supplies up to 50MW from Sarawak to Sabah.

It follows the commissioning of the 275kV Bunut–Medamit–Lawas transmission lines and the Lawas substation in November 2025, which enabled the integration of Sarawak’s northern region into the state grid.

Power exchange between Sarawak and Sabah began on Dec 13, 2025, after successful system synchronisation by the grid system operators of both states.

This interconnection is the second regional link in Borneo, following the Sarawak–West Kalimantan interconnection commissioned in 2016.
